Abstract

In the past two decades, US community colleges have undergone a profound change, shifting emphasis from liberal-arts transfer courses to terminal vocational programs. Drawing on developments nationwide as well as in the specific case of Massachusetts, Steven Brint and Jerome Karabel offer a history of community colleges in America, explaining why this shift has occurred after years of student resistance.

Abstract

Recognizing that future community college leaders - at all levels- will manage increasingly complex organizations, and face very different challenges than their predecessors, this book provides a multidimensional model of leadership suited to these new demands and environments. Through over 75 individual interviews with leaders and campus members, Eddy provides examples of the model's components in practice to illuminate which experiences proved the most relevant for these leaders on their route to upper administration.
